More Than 60 IBEW 1837 Jobs Threatened at PSNH's Merrimack Station

February 27, 2009 - Two critical bills are being considered by the New Hampshire Legislature that are designed to stop the Bow Clean Air Scrubber Project. If approved, these bills could lead to the closure of PSNH's coal-fired Merrimack Station, costing 62 IBEW members their jobs and more than 100 jobs at the plant altogether. Eventually, the closure of Merrimack may also lead to Northeast Utilities selling off their generation facilities, with a potential ripple effect to around 180 members of IBEW 1837 - more than 10% of our Local's membership.

"Our union would like to see more renewable energy generation facilities in New Hampshire," said IBEW 1837 Business Manager Cynthia Phinney, "but it will take time to get such facilities up and running. Efforts to stop the Clean Air Scrubber Project will hurt the environment, our members and the economy of the state."

IBEW 1837 members are being urged to add their voices to the chorus of opposition to House Bill (HB) 496 and Senate Bill (SB) 152 by calling their elected representatives by March 4th and urging no votes on these two bills. Members who can attend public hearings beginning on Thursday, March 5th are urged to do so.

Further information on these bills and how to contact your legislators can be downloaded below. Please TAKE ACTION NOW to help save union jobs!
