WGME-TV Photographer to Receive Murrow Award

April 30, 2009 - WGME-TV Photographer Jason Nelson and News Reporter/Anchor Kim Block took an incredible journey to China last fall and were granted unprecedented access to the medical system in that country. Brother Nelson videotaped Maine surgeons who had traveled to China to help doctors in those hospitals perform lifesaving operations on young children.

The resulting news series “The China Journey” was an emotional and extraordinary look at a country and a health system unknown to most people in the United States. For IBEW 1837 member Jason Nelson, it was “an amazing and eye-opening experience.”

“We may have only seen eight or ten kids’ lives saved out of thousands at the hospital,” Nelson said, “but to see the kids beforehand, and then to be in the operating room during their surgery, and see them smiling two days later, was overwhelming.”

Now, Jason’s outstanding work is being recognized by the Radio-Television News Directors Association with the presentation of the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. “The China Journey” has also received two New England Emmy Award nominations. For Jason, it’s a great finish to an exceptional assignment.

“It’s great to get recognition for it because a lot of heart and soul went into it,” he said. “It was really intense.”
