IBEW 1837 Joins Fight to Save Merrimack Station and Helps Turn Back Bills in New Hampshire Legislature

April 7, 2009 - Construction on the Bow Clean Air Scrubber at Merrimack Station will continue as planned after the New Hampshire State Senate rejected a bill to re-examine or stop the project. Once the state-mandated installation is completed, Merrimack will be one of the cleanest coal plants in the United States.

At least 65 IBEW 1837 jobs at the Bow, New Hampshire power plant and the jobs of hundreds of workers in the Building Trades were at stake as the New Hampshire Legislature considered bills to derail the project by either limiting PSNH’s recovery of its cost or calling for further study. Some supporters of these bills admitted that their real hope was that the power plant would be shut down altogether.
In order to comply with more stringent air quality standards and keep the plant operational beyond July of 2013, it was necessary to reduce Merrimack Station’s mercury emissions. In 2006, with the approval of the Legislature and support from environmentalists, PSNH chose a wet flue scrubber technology to achieve this reduction – with the added benefit of reducing sulfur dioxide emissions. Once the bill cleared the State House and Senate, Governor Lynch promptly signed it into law.
