IBEW 1837 Members Flex Their Political Muscle at Maine AFL-CIO Lobby Day

March 26, 2009 - Six members from IBEW Local 1837 joined more than 100 union workers from throughout the state for the Maine AFL-CIO lobby day in Augusta. Union members heard from some of Maine’s top political and labor leaders before fanning out and filling the halls of the Statehouse. Once there, they met with their individual legislators to lobby them about important bills pending in the House and Senate.

The morning began with Maine Senate President Elizabeth Mitchell and House Speaker Hannah Pingree thanking and praising workers who packed a large room in the Cross Office Building, adjacent to the Statehouse. Maine AFL-CIO President Edward Gorham then provided a concise workshop on the legislative process to help give union members a better grasp of how things work in Augusta.

After a quick training on how to inform and persuade a legislator (most often called “lobbying”), workers listened to issue briefs on some of labor’s top legislative priorities. Those include passing a Green Jobs bill that has the potential to create thousands of new union jobs over ten years; a severance pay reform bill to help protect laid-off workers; and a bill to extend prevailing wage rules to public school construction.
