Building Strength Since 1973
IBEW Local 1837 was formed in 1973 through the merger of several smaller locals in Maine and New Hampshire. At the time, each unit operated with volunteer Business Managers. By combining resources, the newly formed Local was able to achieve the financial stability needed to support a paid staff and provide stronger representation for members.
While early financial goals required adjustments, including a necessary dues change, the foundation was set for long-term growth and sustainability.
Union Leadership
Dick Pray served as IBEW Local 1837’s first Business Manager. When Brother Pray became an International Representative, the Assistant Business Manager Joe Nixon stepped into the role. Over the years, dedicated leaders have continued to guide the union forward, including:

Growth Across Two States
From modest beginnings, IBEW Local 1837 has grown into a 1,700-member union representing utility and communication workers throughout Maine and New Hampshire. The Local’s organizing group has played a critical role in expanding membership and securing additional contract work, strengthening both bargaining power and member representation.
Meeting New Challenges
During the 1990s, corporate reorganizations at companies employing IBEW Local 1837 members placed increased demands on union resources. In response, members voted to raise dues to fund the hiring of a second Assistant Business Manager, a decision that reinforced the Local’s commitment to strong representation during challenging times.
