Approximately 130 members of IBEW Local 1837 are employed in the Southern District of Versant Power, formerly known as Bangor Hydro and later Emera Maine. These members work across a wide range of classifications, including the Customer Service Center, Electrical, Line, System Operations, and Meter departments, supporting the reliable delivery of electric service throughout the region.

Following electric deregulation, Bangor Hydro was purchased by Emera, a Canadian energy company, and its generation assets were sold to PPL Corporation. In 2020, the utility was renamed Versant Power after ENMAX Corporation of Calgary, Alberta, completed a $959 million acquisition of the company.

Today, Versant Power’s Southern District serves approximately 114,000 customers across Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock, Waldo, and Washington counties in Maine. IBEW Local 1837 members in this territory play a critical role in maintaining distribution infrastructure, supporting system operations, assisting customers, and ensuring safe, dependable electric service across a large and diverse service area.

Members working in Versant Power’s Southern territory are part of Unit 10 meetings in Brewer, Maine, maintaining active participation and representation within IBEW Local 1837.
