IBEW Local 1837 members at Black Bear Hydro Partners, LLC operate and maintain hydroelectric dams across Maine, playing a critical role in delivering reliable, renewable energy to local communities. These hydro facilities are located in Ellsworth, Milford, Orono, Stillwater, Medway, and Howland, and together produce approximately 36 megawatts of electricity.
Black Bear Hydro Partners, LLC, acquired these hydroelectric dams from PPL Corporation in 2009 and continue to honor all existing union contracts. In 2023, IBEW Local 1837 members and Black Bear Hydro Partners reached a new five-year collective bargaining agreement.
Prior to PPL’s ownership, the dams were operated by Bangor Hydro, and many of today’s workers are longtime IBEW members who have proudly served through multiple ownership transitions. Their experience and dedication ensure the continued safe and efficient operation of Black Bear Hydro Partners’ facilities.
IBEW Local 1837 members employed by Black Bear Hydro Partners, LLC, are represented as part of Unit 10, continuing a strong tradition of union leadership, worker advocacy, and skilled labor in Maine’s hydroelectric industry.
