The staff of the Maine Democratic Party organized with IBEW Local 1837 in 2021, and their union was voluntarily recognized by the Party. Shortly thereafter, the parties negotiated a first collective bargaining agreement, which went into effect in early 2022, establishing wages, benefits, and workplace protections for the entire staff.
IBEW Local 1837 represents all employees of the Maine Democratic Party, including those working in organizing, data, communications, finance, development, and operations. During campaign season, employees of the coordinated campaign are also represented by IBEW Local 1837, ensuring consistent representation across the organization’s political and electoral efforts.
IBEW representation of political staff extends beyond Maine. Other IBEW locals represent Democratic Party staff in New Hampshire and Massachusetts, and IBEW has also represented the staff of various Democratic presidential candidates. Through collective bargaining, IBEW Local 1837 supports fair workplace standards while enabling staff to carry out the critical work of political organizing and voter engagement across the state.
