NH AFL-CIO Offers Linda Horan Scholarship Program to Support Education
The New Hampshire AFL-CIO has announced it will offer the Linda Horan Scholarship Program for the 2023-2024 academic year. This program aims to address the rising costs of higher education while honoring the memory of Sister Linda Horan, a dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and former Chair of the Scholarship Committee. Sister Linda, who battled cancer and passed away in 2016, had a profound commitment to supporting the next generation and creating opportunities for their educational pursuits.
To help deserving students, the organization will award a minimum of three scholarships for the upcoming school year. The scholarships will be valued at $1,500 for the first-place recipient, $1,000 for the second-place recipient, and $750 for the third-place recipient. The program is open to members in good standing of an affiliated local union, as well as their spouses, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, or legal wards.
To maximize the scholarship aid offered, contributions from local organizations and unions are being sought. The generous contributions from affiliates allowed the program to provide a record amount of assistance last year, and the goal is to help even more students this year. Members are encouraged to contribute to the Linda Horan Scholarship Program and share the contribution form with fellow union members. Making a tax-deductible donation to fund the Scholarship Program is an opportunity to support its cause and continue Sister Linda's legacy.
Applicants for the scholarship will be required to submit an essay. The winners will be honored at the Labor Day Breakfast event on September 4th. To be considered for the scholarship, applications and essays must be submitted by July 28, 2023, and winners will be announced on or before August 18, 2023.
