Protect Your CDL: Check Your Record

A former member of IBEW 1837 was repeatedly denied job opportunities because of a mistake in the federal Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. Although he had resolved a past violation, the employer responsible for updating the record never submitted the correction. As a result, the Clearinghouse continued to show an unresolved infraction. Every time a prospective employer ran a background check, it appeared the issue was still active—and he wasn’t hired. Once the record was corrected, he was finally able to return to work.

In early March, Linemen Tom Eaton (Eversource), Donny Palmer (Unitil), Greg Middleton (Versant Power), and Mechanic Wade Jandreau (Versant Power) represented Local 1837 at the IBEW National Safety Conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Attending conferences and safety classes equips our members with the latest best practices—knowledge they can share locally to keep everyone safer on the job.

Unit Meetings Suspended for Summer Months

Unit meetings for IBEW Local 1837 are temporarily suspended for summer months following a vote by the members of those respective units. Unit 8 in Augusta, however, will hold its regular June meeting on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. in Manchester, Maine, at the IBEW Local 1837 Office, Conference Room.

Below is each unit’s regular meeting pattern, next dates in September and October 2025, and locations.

Units 6-9 to Hold Combined Zoom Meeting in May

Due to ongoing negotiations with Central Maine Power, we will be holding a combined meetings for Units 6, 7, 8, and 9 via Zoom for February, March, April and May.

The date, time, and Zoom link will be shared via email prior to the meetings.

Upcoming Changes to Unit Meeting Schedules

Due to upcoming negotiations with Central Maine Power, there will be changes to the unit meeting schedule for the start of 2025.

Unit meetings for IBEW Local 1837 are back after a brief break. Members had voted in late spring or early summer to temporarily suspend their meetings during the traditional summer vacation months. While most begin in September, Units 6 and 7 will start in October.

2024 NH AFL-CIO Linda Horan Scholarship Program

The New Hampshire AFL-CIO is once again offering the Linda Horan Scholarship Program for the 2024-2025 academic year, which aims to address the rising costs of higher education while honoring the memory of Sister Linda Horan, a dedicated member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and former Chair of the Scholarship Committee. Sister Linda, who battled cancer and passed away in 2016, had a profound commitment to supporting the next generation and creating opportunities for their educational pursuits.

Unit meetings to resume this Fall

After a brief break for the summer, unit meetings are resuming for the fall months. Members had voted in late spring or early summer to temporarily suspend their meetings during the traditional summer vacation months. While most begin in September, a few will start in October.

There are eleven-unit meetings held each month throughout New Hampshire and Maine for our members to attend.

Summer Suspension of Unit Meetings with Exceptions for Units 10 and 11

Following a vote by the members, several unit meetings in IBEW Local 1837 are temporarily suspended for the 2023 summer season. However, please note Units 10 and 11 will continue to hold a combined meeting on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. over Zoom.

Weather or other circumstances may cause the postponement or cancellation of some meetings. Please contact your steward, the union office, or log on to www.ibew1837.org before driving.

IBEW 1837 has moved some meetings online via Zoom for Units that have lost their meeting locations or have chosen not to meet in person. Union staff is available to meet on an as-needed basis where meetings are cancelled. Members may wear a mask when meeting at indoor locations.

141 Jobs at CMP on the Line at PUC Hearing

January 15, 2010 - The Maine Public Utilities Commission is set to hold a crucial public hearing on Wednesday, January 20 at 5:30 p.m. that may well determine the fate of 141 workers at Central Maine Power Company and have an impact of CMP’s customers for years to come.

Union members and their allies are being encouraged to turnout to show support for union workers at Central Maine Power. The hearing will be held at the PUC offices at 101 Second St., Hallowell, Maine.

Portland Holiday FunkFest for FairPoint Strikers on December 22

December 12, 2014 — A lineup of some of Portland’s most prominent musicians is holding a “Holiday FunkFest for FairPoint Strikers” on Monday, December 22, at Empire music hall. The evening will be headlined by the eight-piece band Model Airplane. Adam Waxman and Joe Farrell and special guest Kenya Hall will also perform.

The announcement of the benefit concert at Empire marks the latest surge in public support for the FairPoint strikers. Since the strike began on October 17, the workers’ relief fund has received nearly $150,000 in donations.

NH AFL-CIO Scholarship Deadline Extended to May 15, 2015

The deadline to submit essays and application forms for the NH AFL-CIO Scholarship has been extended. They must be received no later than 4:00 p.m., Friday, May 15, 2015 by the NH AFL-CIO Scholarship Committee, 161 Londonderry Turnpike, Hooksett, NH 03106.

This year, the NH AFL-CIO will again award scholarships to members in good standing of an affiliated local union, their spouses, children, stepchildren, or legal wards. First prize is $1,000. Additional prizes are contingent on funding.

Union Members Celebrate Labor's Day in New Hampshire and Maine

September 1, 2015 - The first Monday in September is a day for workers: Labor's Day. It's a popular time for union members and their families to possibly enjoy one last taste of summer while taking stock of the many challenges facing working people today. Special guest speakers and awards are part of the program at some events sponsored by the two State AFL-CIO's and some Central Labor Councils.
